Dear Room 41,
I miss all of you! I have started my new school year as a fifth grade teacher. We're reading some of the same
books because you liked them so much and I've borrowed some pages from our website for this fifth grade website. Our
fourth grade website will stay put and hopefully it can still help you with homework and assist you in preparing for the STAR
Science test. Go back and review all our science links when the time comes--you'll be assessed on fourth and fifth grade
standards. You are all ready for fifth grade and are sure to have a great year! I hope you had a relaxing summer
and make sure you stay in touch!

4th Grade Thoughts and More...
Dear Parents,
Well, in a matter of days your child will be leaving fourth grade and getting ready for fifth,
the last year of elementary school. On the first day of fourth grade we start to lay the groundwork for success in fifth
grade
and beyond. Expectations in terms of behavior and responsibility increase every
year and as a class we all know that WE ARE READY! The expectations have been very high this year and all of our students
have put out 110% to try to meet those expectations. They all know that these are expectations that THEY need to
have for themselves. Our teachers and parents are here to support and guide us, but we will not see the kind of
success that we all want unless WE expect a lot from ourselves. And, guess what? You have become a class with high expectations!
I am so proud of you and have enjoyed my year with you. You don't even realize how much you have accomplished this year.
As you all know, I will
not be returning to Sunland Magnet next year. I thank you for a wonderful year with your children.

We loved this book!
After completing our read-aloud, The
Tale of Despereaux, I chose a short piece of writing from the book, read it aloud, and asked students to
do a quickwrite in response to the book. The results of this simple exercise are
astounding. Consider the following examples, written by the students of Room 41.
"Light is precious and it might as
well be in stories. I am a jailer and you are a tiny mouse whispering stories in my ear. Tell me a story, tell
more. Bring light to us all. We all could use some light. Tell me the best story you can think of.
Light is precious, stories are precious. I would like some brightness. We need light. Stories are like magic.
Stories remind me of bright flares or sunlight. Stories are the drizzley goodness of our souls." --Christopher

Arts Program

“Sunland Elementary School has been chosen
to participate in Los Angeles Unified
School District’s Arts Program.
Throughout the year, teachers volunteer to have their class experience twelve weeks of visual arts, twelve weeks of
dance, and twelve weeks of theatre.
Their first rotation is visual arts. In this standards based
program, students learn about artists, different styles, experience various mediums, and explore their creative ability. After
learning about lines and color, students are now using clay to sculpture “masterpieces” of their own.
This program gives students a unique opportunity to learn more about art and all of the wonder
visual art can provide.”

As defined by Dr. Thomas Lickona, character education is the deliberate
effort to develop virtues that are good for the individual and good for society. The objective goodness of virtues is based
on the fact that they:
- Affirm our human dignity
- Promote the well-being and happiness of the individual
- Serve the common good
- Define our rights and obligations
- Meet the classical ethical tests of reversibility (Would you want
to be treated this way?) and universalizability (Would you want all persons to act this way in a similar situation?).

Specially Funded Grant Coordinator, Sunland is one of the 2 schools that received a multimedia mobile wireless lab.
As a result, each student in the magnet can experience the wealth of benefits that technology-based learning has to offer.
Research shows that technology raises student motivation and achievement when integrated into the curriculum; kids become
more engaged, master basic skills more easily, and perform better academically.
“Laptops will help us study and write better. I also hope to make a movie with it!”
“On our new computers, we will do Power Point. In the group I am in now, we already started to do a
Power Point about the astronaut Mae Jemison. I could tell that we will be using the laptops tons of times for projects!”
